The Deep End Story...

It was a hot and sunny summer day in Atlanta. Kristen "K.D." Stewart was settled into her favorite spot—in her red prayer chair by the window—spending time with the Lord, sipping coffee, and savoring the memories of her recent trip to Israel. Reading the Aaronic Blessing (Numbers 6:24-26) and wishing she could hear it again in Hebrew, Kristen got a nudge from the Lord (actually, it was more like an elbow to the side). “I want you to move to Dallas and go to seminary full-time,” God quietly spoke to her heart.

"Seriously God?!" K.D. thought, reminding Him that she was a happy, successful, 40-something who was already serving the Him as a communications professional. For years she had been leading public relations efforts for some of the world’s most influential Christian ministries, including Samaritan’s Purse, The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, Women of Faith, and Promise Keepers. "Really God?! You want me to give up my life in Atlanta, including my job and financial security, to dive into four grueling years Dallas Theological Seminary?"

Reminded of Jonah's disobedience and resulting consequences (seminary was probably a far better place than the belly of a fish), Kristen said “I’m in Lord… but why seminary?” The Lord’s response was an image of a swimming pool... The shallow end was crammed with Christians who were splashing around, staying cool, and relaxing in the assurance of eternal security, while the deep end was nearly vacant. Placing that picture in her mind’s eye, God cast His vision for Kristen and Deep End Ministries. “You are going to learn how to not only survive but to thrive in the theological depths,” the Lord indicated. “And then you’re going serve Me by drawing others into the deep.”

And that’s how it all started. From a comfy prayer-chair conversation with Kristen in Atlanta, God has faithfully developed His vision for Deep End Ministries into a real-life adventure… an odyssey of His Word and Character that is inspiring passionate Christ-followers to go deep with the Lord.

Our Purpose

Two-thirds of Americans believe that the Bible contains everything a person needs to know to live a meaningful life, yet...

58% say they don’t personally want wisdom and advice from the Bible

57% read it fewer than five times per year. (Source: American Bible Society)

Deep End Ministries exists for the purposes of drawing Christ-followers deeper into God's Word where lives are transformed and faith is strengthened. A teaching and discipleship non-profit, Deep End Ministries offers resources including creative, accessible and theologically deep Bible Studies; in-person teaching for retreats, conferences, and other church activities; and local church teacher training/equipping

Jerome, a Christian priest from the 4th Century A.D., is quoted as saying, “The Scriptures are shallow enough for a babe to come and drink without drowning and deep enough for theologians to swim in without ever touching bottom.”

Whether your experience in the Bible has been a life-long journey or periodic visit, if you have even the slightest desire to know God better, you can move from the shallow waters where the simple basics of Christianity are learned to deeper waters where the exploration of God’s Character and love for you is boundless.

Too many believers today are simply satisfied with putting their trust in Christ and securing their eternal life with the Lord. That’s the perfect start… but it is not the end. The writer of Hebrews, encourages a group of weary 1st Century believers to press on to mature Christian living:

“For though you should in fact be teachers by this time, you need someone to teach you the beginning elements of God's utterances. You have gone back to needing milk, not solid food. For everyone who lives on milk is inexperienced in the message of righteousness, because he is an infant. But solid food is for the mature, whose perceptions are trained by practice to discern both good and evil. Therefore we must progress beyond the elementary instructions about Christ and move on to maturity…”

(Heb 5:12-6:1, NET)

Deep End Ministries is responding to the Hebrews challenge by considering God’s Word within its historical, cultural, and literary context as well as the original language of Hebrew and Greek. A rich, invigorating and mature life with Christ awaits us all in deeper theological waters. Will you join us in the Deep End?!
